Year 4

Spring 2
Welcome to Year 4:
Manatee and Takin Class

Miss Parmar is the class teacher in Takin Class and Miss Rahman is teaching Manatee Class.

Welcome

Welcome to year 4! We hope you find the information below useful. This information will help you support your child at home with the organisation of their week and their learning at home.

Key Times

Homework

Homework will be set every week. This homework includes spellings (new spellings given out every Monday and test on Friday), learning timetables (1-12) and every child should be reading for 10-15 minutes every day.

PE

In Year 4 PE is on Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure that your child has a clean PE kit to bring in at the start of each week. The kit should consist of a Harris Primary Academy PE T-shirt, black shorts, black jogging bottoms, black trainers or plimsolls. This half-term pupils will be learning Tag Rugby.

The academy’s day begins at 8:30. Please ensure that your child is in school at this time.

Children will be dismissed at 3:30pm.

What are we learning?

Literacy

In Literacy we will be reading “Twelfth Night” which is a fantastic comedy of mistaken identities. Our writing focus will be setting narrative in a narrative, biography and tetractys poem. In the last few weeks, we will be reading “Tudor London”. We will learn how to research effectively and write a non-chronological report.

Maths

In Maths this term we will begin by learning to measure the length and perimeter of polygons and rectilinear shapes. We will then move on to Fractions where children will learn about improper fractions, equivalent fractions and how to convert fractions. We will end the half term by beginning to look at Decimals.

Science

In Science, we will be learning about electricity. Children will test and answer different questions, for example, how do we make a working circuit with different elements including bulbs, switches, and buzzers? We will also identify good conductors and bad conductors.

Geography

We will continue learning about Italy. Italy sits on the border of two tectonic plates (African plate and Eurasian plate) and is at risk from natural hazards.  Looking into three major volcanoes: Mt Etna, Mt Vesuvius and Mt Stromboli we will develop deeper understanding what causes volcano eruption. Also, we will discuss why people choose to live near the volcanoes.

History

We will be developing our knowledge of Ancient Rome by looking further into what life was like in Roman Britain. We will be looking at how the Romans conquered Britain, who stood against them, how they changed our streets, home and roads and what legacies did they leave behind.

RE

In RE we will be moving on from learning about Hajj and look more into forgiveness; what it is, what Christians believe it is, and whether it is always possible. We will also ask the question, ‘Why did Jesus have enemies?’.

Computing

Effective searching and hardware will be our focus in computing. Children will learn about how to effectively search the internet and find credible information. Also, we will discuss the function of the different parts of a computer.

Art

In Art we will be exploring how printing works and will be using Portuguese Azulejos as inspiration to create our own printing patterns.

DT

This term, children will evaluate their prototypes and improve their designs to create a final product - a night light.

French

In French, children will learn nouns and adjectives to describe faces and parts of the body.

PSHE

In PSHE we will be thinking about what is not appropriate to share on social media. We will discuss fake news, clickbait, and internet advertising.

PE

In PE we will be learning touch rugby, developing our fine motor skills, balance and passing.

Music

We will develop technical control of a recorder. We will start learning two contrasting pieces: Arirang, Korean Folk song and Amazing Grace.

How can I help at home?

One of the keyways every parent can help is to ensure that your child is at school every day and on time. Other than this, the main way you can help is by ensuring that your child reads every day, for at least 10-15 minutes (filling in their Rainbow Bookmark) – this can be with you, or on their own, but it is the most effective way of ensuring that your child progresses and learns outside of school. All pupils should be practising their spellings set each week, every day. Children also have their Purple Mash and Timetables Rock Stars login – please encourage them to use these frequently, as it will really help with their quick recall of mathematical facts and their timetables. As Year 4 have their timetables check in the Summer Term, it is also vital that they are practising their timetables 1-12 every day to prepare them for this.

If you have any questions, please talk to Miss Parmar or Miss Rahman, or you can arrange a meeting at the office.

Thanks,

Miss Parmar and Miss Rahman
