Year 3

Spring 1
Welcome to Year 3:
Giant Pandas Class and Polar Bear Class

Miss Sayers is teaching Giant Panda Class this year and Miss Ali is teaching Polar Bear Class. Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Gorman will be supporting across Year 3.

Welcome

Welcome to Year 3! We hope you find the information below useful. This information will help you support your child at home with the organisation of their week and their learning at home.

Key Times

Homework

Each week, children are expected to learn their spellings, practice their times tables, practice their joined-up handwriting, and read for 30 minutes each night.

PE

In year 3, the PE days are Monday and Thursday for both classes.

Please ensure that your child comes to school wearing school uniform and they will then change in school. PE this term is Tag Rugby.

Trips

We are planning on having at trip to Tate Modern.

Key Times

For Year 3, the school day will begin at 8.30, and end at 3.30. Please stick to these timings.

What are we learning?

Literacy

In Literacy, we will be reading “The Day the Crayons Quit” by Drew Daywalt. We will be looking at the story in detail, writing story narratives and persuasive letters. We will also read Gregory Cool and complete a recount and setting description.

Maths

In Math’s, we will be continuing to learn our times tables and their inverse calculations. We will also continue to look at different units of measurement and fractions.

Science

In Science, we are examining plants and how they grow – we will be focusing on the functions of plants and how each function impacts growth and life. We will have a go at growing our own plants too, with the possibility of dissecting those which have grown.

Geography

Geography this term will focus on London itself, where we will be discussing in depth the human and physical make up of London. We will focus on how land has been used too.

History

In History, we will be bringing all our knowledge of the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age together and focus on this main learning question: “Did Britain change that much in a million years?”. We will critique this question, using evidence from our prior learning.

RE

In RE this term, we will focus on Christianity, thinking specifically about the lead up to Easter. We will be asking “What is ‘good’ about Good Friday?”.

Computing

Our focus this term is branching databases. We will be examining how they can be used for sorting and retrieving information, as well as looking at the ways that they can help a computer to perform tasks.

Art

In Art, we will be learning about Paul Klee and the technique of printing. We will be creating different pieces of work, where we will we create an image on a template (collagraph) and then use ink to print the image.

French

This term we are exploring adjectives, plurals, and singular nouns in French. We are using our knowledge of farm animals and colors to help us with this, including the song Old MacDonald's Farm.

PSHE

In PSHE, we will be looking at what rights are and what rights people have within the world. We will go through the different articles that discuss where student education is protected and what rights we have as students. Wellbeing will remain a focal point of our learning.

PE

PE this term is tag rugby. Please note that PE days are Monday and Thursday.

Music

In Music, we are continuing to practice the recorder and our singing.

How can I help at home?

One of the keyways every parent can help, is to ensure that your child is at school every day and on time. Other than this, the main way you can help is by ensuring that your child reads every day, for at least 30 minutes – this can be with you, or on their own, but it is the most effective way of ensuring that your child progresses and learns outside of school. Practicing times tables frequently is vital, and children should be confident in their times tables by the end of Year 4.

Children have logins for Times Table Rockstars and Purple Mash– please encourage them to use this frequently, as it will really help with their quick recall of mathematical facts.

If you have any questions, please talk to Miss Sayers or Ms Ali, alternatively, you can arrange a meeting via the school email.

Thanks,

Miss Sayers and Ms Ali.
