Maths

Mathematics at Harris Primary Academy Kent House is taught daily. We value and encourage deep mathematical conceptual understanding which can be seen in our Maths overview and curriculum.  We use a mastery approach to support children with their calculation skills and our calculation policy supports these methods.

At Kent House, we want our children to be confident mathematicians, fluent mathematicians, and able to solve problems. We teach maths for mastery. This means that we are teaching children to have a deep conceptual understanding rather than teaching so that children can get a correct answer. Being able to explain how they got an answer, why that answer is right, and what might happen if a particular variable was changed are the hallmarks of a mathematician – simply getting the answer right ought to be a given. To be able to access many of the types of reasoning and problem solving problems they will encounter, children must be arithmetically fluent. We structure our teaching and progression in order to ensure that our children develop these necessary arithmetic skills.

During lockdown some children will have found learning online difficult, which we understand. This year we have been putting extra steps in place to support children to have the knowledge and understanding that they need to succeed. This includes extra daily maths sessions to practise the fundamental skills needed.
