Year 6

Summer 1

Welcome to Year 6:
Hammerhead Shark Class, Blue Whale Class and Green Turtle Class

Welcome to Year 6:
Hammerhead Shark Class, Blue Whale Class and Green Turtle Class

Miss Simmons is teaching Hammerhead Shark Class this year, Miss Mills is teaching Blue Whale Class and Mrs Borecka is the class teacher in Green Turtle Class.

Welcome

Welcome to year 6! We hope you find the information below useful. This information will help you support your child at home with the organisation of their week and their learning at home.

Key Times

Homework

Children will be given two maths questions each day to complete at home and bring in the following morning. We will go through these in class the next day. This is with the view of supporting them in their transition on to secondary school.

PE

The P.E days for Hammerhead Shark Class and Blue Whale Class are Monday and Friday. The P.E days for Green Turtle Class are Monday and Tuesday. The children may sometimes do P.E outside, so please make sure they have appropriate clothing and shoes for all sessions.

Trips

We are in the process of planning some great trips for the Summer Term after SATS so our pupils can really make the most of their final months at primary school. We will share more information with you in due course.

Key Times

For Year 6, the school day will now begin at 8:00, and end at 3.30. Pupils can arrive at school from 8:00 to come in for a soft start activity. We will then be doing some maths revision from 8:15-8:45. This will be up until SATS. If a child arrives after 8:45, they must be taken round to the school office.

SATS

Year 6 SATS week will be the week beginning 13th May. The test days are as follows:

Monday- Grammar and Spelling

Tuesday- Reading

Wednesday- Arithmetic and Reasoning 1

Thursday- Reasoning 2

More information will be shared with you in due course, and there is a parent meeting after school on 30.4.24

What are we learning?

Literacy

In Literacy, we will be reading Goldilocks on CCTV which is a poetry book twisting the classic fairytales! Our writing will include a twisted fairytale narrative, a newspaper report and a fairytale crime investigation!

Maths

In maths, we will be focusing on algebra and ratio before revisiting some key topics from year 6. We will be having a heavy focus on reasoning skills this half-term. After SATS, we will begin some secondary transition units.

Science

Animals Including Humans will be our focus in science, firstly looking at the circulatory system including what blood is made up of and the features of the heart. We will then move on to looking at how exercise, nutrition and drugs effect our body. At the end of the unit, we will be conducting a dissection of a lamb’s heart. A letter about this will follow.

Geography

We will be looking at micro-climates focusing on the difference between weather and climate, studying the features of the different climate zones and exploring the adaptations that humans, animals and plants make to live in different climates.

History

In History, we will be learning about how London has changed over the years. Each week we will look at London during a different period of history including: The Romans, The Tudors and The Georgians. We will be exploring how these different groups influenced life in London.

RE

In RE, we will be exploring the question ‘What is the best way for a Jew to show commitment to their God?’

Computing

We will be focusing on coding in computing, designing and making more complex programs, as well as using functions and flow charts.

Art

In Art, we will be learning about sculpture. We will begin by designing and producing a soap sculpture inspired by the work of Barbara Hepworth. We will then be working towards producing a 3D sculpture made out of interlocking 2D cardboard pieces.

French

In French, we will be using key vocabulary to talk about our holidays. We will also have a focus on conversational French and will prepare and perform a conversation in partners.

PSHE

In PSHE we will be exploring mental health and how to look after ourselves. We will explore the warning signs of that someone may be struggling with their mental health, as well as where to get support. We will also look at the laws around drugs and how the media portrays them.

PE

In PE we will be doing cricket and athletics.

Music

For our music lessons, we will be focusing on song writing! We will learn how to put together our own songs and how to develop lyrics in a verse/chorus structure.

DT

In DT we will start to research mechanical toys before designing, making and evaluating our own prototype for one.

How can I help at home?

One of the key ways every parent can help is to ensure that your child is at school every day and on time. Other than this, the main way you can help is by ensuring that your child reads every day, for at least 30 minutes – this can be with you, or on their own, but it is the most effective way of ensuring that your child progresses and learns outside of school. Practising times tables frequently is vital.

Children have logins for Times Table Rock Stars and Purple Mash– please encourage them to use this frequently, as it will really help with their quick recall of mathematical facts.

If you have any questions, please talk to Miss Simmons, Miss Mills or Mrs Borecka.

Thanks,

Miss Simmons, Miss Mills and Mrs Borecka
